Chelsea have rejected an approach from Roma for Jamie Gittens and have made it clear the England winger is not available for either a loan or permanent transfer at this stage.
Roma’s proposal was structured as a loan with an option to buy, but Chelsea turned down the offer as the Italian club attempts to strengthen Gian Piero Gasperini’s attacking options before the transfer window closes.
The decision is a significant indication that Chelsea intend to keep the 22-year-old at Stamford Bridge for the new season, despite Roma’s interest.
Chelsea determined to keep Gittens
Sky Sport Italia, via Gianluca Di Marzio, reported that Roma had made an initial offer for Gittens but Chelsea rejected the proposed terms.
Further reports indicate Chelsea’s position goes beyond simply rejecting Roma’s particular proposal. The Blues are currently unwilling to sanction either a temporary or permanent departure for the winger.
Journalist Nizaar Kinsella also reported that Chelsea want Gittens to stay and that the player himself wants to remain at Stamford Bridge.
Roma’s interest could potentially be revisited before the window closes, but any deal would require a significant change in Chelsea’s current stance.
Gittens remains part of Chelsea’s plans
Gittens joined Chelsea from Borussia Dortmund in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth £51.5 million.
His first season in west London proved challenging, with injuries affecting his opportunities. He recorded one goal and five assists across 27 appearances.
However, the winger has featured prominently during Chelsea’s preparations for the new campaign under Xabi Alonso.
Gittens played in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season matches and contributed a goal and an assist during the club’s tour of Asia and Australasia, strengthening the indications that Alonso intends to keep him as part of his first-team options.
Chelsea’s decision comes despite considerable competition for places in wide attacking areas following another summer of investment in the squad.
Roma continue search for reinforcements
Roma’s attempt to sign Gittens forms part of their push for further additions before the transfer deadline.
The Serie A club are also working on a deal for Fenerbahce defender Jayden Oosterwolde, with Sky Sport Italia reporting that negotiations for the versatile Netherlands defender are progressing.
For Gittens, however, Chelsea’s message is currently firm: the winger remains part of their plans and is not available for transfer.
