Gary Neville questions Man Utd players’ faith in Carrick

Neville says Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism may point to wider dressing-room unrest, while Carrick confirms his captain remains in the role.

Gary Neville believes Bruno Fernandes’ public criticism of Michael Carrick points to deeper problems inside Manchester United’s dressing room, but Carrick says he and his captain have resolved their disagreement and confirmed Fernandes will remain captain.

Neville made his comments on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, after United suffered a 4-1 defeat at Como and then lost 3-0 at home to Bournemouth. The former United captain questioned the club’s decision to keep Carrick in charge, suggesting the hierarchy had struggled to agree on a replacement.

Neville also argued that Fernandes’ criticism of Carrick’s tactics could reflect wider discontent among the players. That is Neville’s interpretation of the situation; it has not been confirmed by the squad.

Neville questions United’s decision to keep Carrick

United’s defeat at Bournemouth on Sunday extended their winless run in all competitions to eight matches. The team sit 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone, and have not won a league match since 30 August.

Neville said he believed club officials had debated Carrick’s future after the Bournemouth loss, but suggested the decision to retain him reflected a lack of planning and available alternatives. He also drew on his own experience as Valencia manager, saying he had been pleased when he was dismissed.

The club held discussions about Carrick’s position on Monday, but he remained in charge ahead of Saturday’s match away to Chelsea. The decision came amid expectations that he could be sacked after the Bournemouth defeat.

Carrick says Fernandes remains captain

Fernandes criticised United’s approach after the Como defeat, questioning the decision not to press the Italian side more aggressively. Carrick responded after the match by saying that tactics would not work if players failed to run back and defend.

The Portugal midfielder was left out of the starting line-up against Bournemouth and remained an unused substitute. On Thursday, Carrick said Fernandes was fully committed to United and would continue as captain. He described the selection decision as what he believed was right for that game and said clear-the-air discussions had resolved the disagreement.

Neville, however, suggested that a captain speaking publicly about a manager’s tactics could indicate that stronger criticism was being expressed privately. He said players’ dressing rooms can be “brutal” places and argued that Fernandes’ comments might represent only a small part of what teammates were saying internally.

That claim remains speculation. Neither Carrick nor Fernandes has publicly said that the wider squad has lost faith in the manager.

Carragher speculates about Carrick’s state of mind

Jamie Carragher, another Stick to Football co-host, said he thought Carrick might privately want to leave his position. Carragher questioned how the manager could address players before the Chelsea match if they believed his departure was only a matter of time.

Carragher’s remarks were his personal assessment; Carrick has not said that he wants to be sacked. At his news conference on Thursday, the United manager rejected the suggestion that he needed assurances about his future, saying he understood the responsibilities of the job.

The coming game at Chelsea gives Carrick an immediate chance to respond to the pressure. United’s poor run and the public disagreement with their captain have intensified scrutiny, while the club’s decision to retain Carrick has left him with the task of restoring results and confidence.
