Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo scored international goal number 138 as he inspired his country to come back from behind and beat Spain on penalties in the UEFA Nations League final.
The 40-year-old who scored the winning goal against Germany in the semi-final on Wednesday was the hero again as he bagged the second equaliser to tie the teams at 2-2 after 120 minutes on Sunday.
An injury forced Ronaldo off and he was unable to contribute to the 5-3 penalty shoot out win that followed the deadlock after extra time.
A miss from the spot by Spanish striker Alvaro Morata set up defensive midfielder Ruben Neves to score the winning penalty for Portugal.
Portugal scorer Nuno Mendes was named Player of the Match by the UEFA Technical Observer Group, who said of his display: “He was incredible, both in attack and defensively during the tournament. He scored in the final, also providing an assist in the semi-final.”
Ronaldo meanwhile is now the joint-second top scorer in UEFA Nations League history with 15 goals, equal with Aleksandar Mitrović and behind only Erling Haaland (19).
