Julian Alvarez has reportedly made his transfer preference clear after Real Madrid entered the race with a sensational £129 million offer for the Atletico Madrid striker.
The Argentina international has become one of the hottest properties in European football following an outstanding campaign in Spain, attracting interest from several elite clubs including Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and now Real Madrid.
According to reports, Real Madrid submitted a massive €150 million (£129.3m) bid to Atletico Madrid in an attempt to lure the forward across the Spanish capital. However, Atletico immediately rejected the proposal, underlining their determination to keep one of their most important players.
Despite the eye-watering offer and the opportunity to join one of football’s most successful clubs, Alvarez is said to have his heart set on a move elsewhere.
Sources close to the player indicate that Barcelona remains his preferred destination, with the former Manchester City star viewing the Camp Nou as the ideal next step in his career. That preference has reportedly been communicated to both Barcelona and Real Madrid.
Alvarez is understood to be flattered by Real Madrid’s interest and intrigued by their willingness to make him one of the most expensive footballers in history. Nevertheless, his desire to join Barcelona has not changed.
The situation leaves the Catalan giants facing a major challenge.
While Barcelona are believed to be leading the race in the player’s mind, matching Atletico’s valuation appears far more complicated. The Spanish champions have not considered spending anywhere near the amount offered by Real Madrid and are now exploring whether a deal can be structured in a way that makes financial sense.
Atletico Madrid’s position could prove decisive.
Club officials are expected to resist strengthening a direct domestic rival and there is little indication they would offer Barcelona any preferential terms. The rejection of Real Madrid’s huge bid has only reinforced Atletico’s strong negotiating stance.
Elsewhere, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain continue to monitor developments. Both clubs have tracked Alvarez for months and remain interested should circumstances change.
The Gunners are actively searching for attacking reinforcements as Mikel Arteta looks to build a squad capable of ending their long wait for a Premier League title. PSG, meanwhile, remain keen admirers despite facing competition from Spain’s biggest clubs.
For now, however, Alvarez’s focus remains firmly on staying in La Liga.
Although Real Madrid’s extraordinary offer has added a dramatic twist to one of the summer’s biggest transfer sagas, sources insist Barcelona remains the club the World Cup winner most wants to join.
Whether the Catalans can find a way to complete such a complicated deal now remains the biggest question of all.
