West Ham United majority shareholder David Sullivan has denied a series of allegations made by several women following a joint investigation by BBC Panorama and The Times into his conduct dating back decades.

The investigation includes claims from seven women who allege Sullivan used his position of influence in the newspaper and adult entertainment industries to pursue or pressure young women into sexual relationships during the 1980s and 1990s. The women’s accounts include allegations of coercive behaviour, inappropriate propositions and sexual misconduct.

One woman alleged she felt compelled to have sex with Sullivan during what she believed was a professional meeting, while others described encounters they say took place while seeking modelling or career opportunities linked to his businesses. The allegations were detailed in a joint BBC Panorama and Times investigation published this week.

Sullivan, 77, has strongly rejected all accusations.

In statements issued through his legal representatives, the businessman described the allegations as “factually incorrect” and “entirely false.” He has also announced plans to pursue legal action against the BBC and other media organisations that repeat what he says are defamatory claims.

Days before the findings were published, Sullivan stepped down as West Ham’s joint chairman and resigned from his directorship roles at both the football club and its holding company. He said the decision was taken to avoid becoming a distraction while he fights the allegations. Despite stepping down from his executive role, he remains the club’s majority shareholder.

West Ham confirmed that none of the allegations relate to the football club or its operations. The club’s day-to-day affairs will continue under the leadership of interim chief executive Karim Virani while the board considers its next steps.

The controversy has attracted wider attention beyond football. Reports indicate police forces have reviewed complaints linked to some of the allegations, while questions have also been raised about Sullivan’s future involvement in the game. No criminal charges have been brought against him.

Sullivan built a fortune through publishing, newspapers and the adult entertainment industry before becoming one of English football’s most prominent club owners. He has been involved with West Ham for more than 15 years and was a key figure in the club’s ownership structure alongside the late David Gold.

The allegations and Sullivan’s denials are expected to remain under intense scrutiny as legal proceedings and further investigations continue.
