Real Madrid have reportedly reached an agreement to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella in a deal worth up to £51.8 million once the World Cup concludes.
The Spain international is currently representing his country at the tournament in North America, but negotiations between the clubs have been completed, paving the way for his return to La Liga.
The agreement is understood to be worth an initial £47.5 million, with a further £4.3 million included in performance-related add-ons.
Cucurella is set to leave Chelsea four years after arriving from Brighton in a £63 million transfer.
The 27-year-old had long been linked with a move back to Spain and was reportedly open to returning to his homeland after establishing himself as a key figure in the Premier League.
Having emerged through Barcelona’s famed academy system, Cucurella had previously attracted interest from both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.
However, it is Real Madrid who have won the race for his signature.
The move forms part of an ambitious rebuild at the Santiago Bernabeu following Florentino Perez’s re-election as club president and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as head coach.
Real are also pursuing several other high-profile additions, including Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan wing-back Denzel Dumfries, while Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is expected to arrive after leaving Anfield.
Cucurella’s departure comes after a disappointing campaign for Chelsea.
The London club endured a turbulent season that saw Enzo Maresca leave midway through the campaign before Liam Rosenior took charge.
Results failed to improve significantly and Rosenior was eventually dismissed after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League and missed out on European qualification.
Sources indicate Cucurella was among a number of senior players left frustrated by the instability at Stamford Bridge.
The defender had publicly voiced concerns about the direction of the club during the March international break and was reportedly part of a group of players unhappy with developments behind the scenes.
Although Cucurella still had two years remaining on his contract, Chelsea opted to accept Real Madrid’s offer as they continue their own squad restructuring.
The Blues have since appointed former Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso as their permanent head coach for the 2026-27 season.
For Real Madrid, Cucurella’s arrival adds proven international quality and versatility to Mourinho’s defensive options as the Spanish giants look to reclaim domestic and European dominance.
The transfer is expected to be formally completed following the conclusion of Spain’s World Cup campaign.
