Arsenal have entered the race to sign RB Leipzig defender Lutsharel Geertruida, setting up a potential transfer battle with Liverpool for the highly-rated Netherlands international.

The 25-year-old impressed during a season-long loan spell at Sunderland last season, making 30 Premier League appearances as the Black Cats secured an unexpected seventh-place finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

Liverpool came close to signing Geertruida during the January transfer window after injuries to Conor Bradley and Jeremie Frimpong left the club short at right-back.

According to reports, the Reds had already reached an agreement on personal terms with the former Feyenoord defender, with then-manager Arne Slot eager to reunite with a player he coached in the Netherlands. However, the deal collapsed because of the complexity of negotiating with both Sunderland and parent club RB Leipzig so late in the transfer window.

Liverpool’s interest has not disappeared, but Arsenal are now preparing to challenge for his signature.

Reports claim Mikel Arteta’s side have added Geertruida to their shortlist as they look to strengthen at right-back. His ability to operate as a central defender and defensive midfielder, in addition to his natural full-back role, is viewed as a major advantage.

Liverpool are also believed to remain keen, with new head coach Andoni Iraola reportedly valuing Geertruida’s versatility, composure in possession and tactical flexibility.

The Dutch international is expected to be available for around €25 million (£21 million), making him one of the more affordable defensive options on the market this summer.

Arsenal’s interest comes as questions continue over Ben White’s long-term future. The Gunners are exploring several right-back options, with Geertruida joined on their shortlist by Aston Villa defender Ezri Konsa and West Ham United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Should Arsenal complete a deal, Geertruida would provide direct competition for Jurriën Timber while also offering cover across multiple defensive positions.

Liverpool, meanwhile, may still hold an advantage after previously agreeing personal terms with the defender. However, Arsenal’s growing interest threatens to complicate any move and could spark a bidding war between two Premier League rivals.

With Leeds United also previously linked with the Dutch defender, Geertruida is emerging as one of the most sought-after bargain defenders of the summer transfer window.
