Football icon Ronaldinho is set for a stunning return to the game more than a decade after bringing his professional playing career to an end.
The Brazilian great has agreed a deal with Italian Serie C side Ravenna FC, marking an unexpected comeback at the age of 46.
Ronaldinho, who last played professionally for Fluminense in 2015, will be officially unveiled by the club during a special event in Miami on June 23. The former Barcelona star is also understood to hold a shareholding in the club as part of the project.
Announcing his excitement over the move, Ronaldinho said he was eager to begin a new chapter with Ravenna and help grow the club’s ambitions.
“New colours, same smile. I cannot wait to dance with the ball and write a beautiful new story with Ignazio Cipriani and the Cipriani family,” he said.
“Football has always been joyful for me, and I’m excited to bring that spirit to Ravenna. Let the magic begin!”
The club has been under new ownership since 2024 after businessman Ignazio Cipriani completed a takeover. Cipriani, who oversees an international luxury hospitality and residential brand, described Ronaldinho’s arrival as a landmark moment in the club’s history.
“This is an extraordinary moment for Ravenna FC,” he said.
“He was my idol growing up, and his impact on football goes far beyond what he achieved on the pitch.
“I hope his involvement inspires a new generation of supporters to discover Ravenna FC and become part of our journey.”
The club’s leadership team also includes former AC Milan executive Ariedo Braida, who serves as vice-president.
Ronaldinho remains one of the most celebrated footballers of his generation. The Brazilian magician played a central role in Brazil winning the 2002 FIFA World Cup and helped FC Barcelona capture the UEFA Champions League title in 2006.
His dazzling performances earned him the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2005, cementing his place among the game’s all-time greats.
During a successful spell in Italy with AC Milan, Ronaldinho also added a Serie A title to his collection before eventually returning to Brazil to finish his playing career.
Now, more than 10 years after his last professional appearance, one of football’s most entertaining figures is preparing to lace up his boots once again in what promises to be one of the sport’s most remarkable comeback stories.
