Lisandro Martinez has reportedly agreed personal terms with Atletico Madrid, bringing a potential Manchester United exit into sharper focus. The report says the defender is keen on the move, but there has been no official contact between the clubs so far.

Martinez’s United contract runs until 2027, and the club hold an option to extend it by a further year. TEAMtalk has previously reported that he does not want United to activate that option, which could make January an important window if the club hope to secure a transfer fee.

Atletico terms agreed, but clubs yet to open talks

A report cited by CaughtOffside says Atletico and Martinez have agreed terms in principle. It also claims the defender is likely to leave after a recent outburst at the Madrid club’s stadium. However, without formal club-to-club contact, a transfer is not yet agreed.

The reported development comes amid criticism of Martinez’s recent performances for United. He was blamed for his part in Dominic Solanke’s equaliser against Tottenham and struggled in the defeat by Chelsea, where he was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. The dismissal also contributed to United conceding a penalty.

Martinez has also drawn scrutiny after speaking publicly about United and the club’s hierarchy. The report says he is keen to leave, while United are expected to consider defensive additions in January, including at centre-back and left-back.

Pundits criticise Martinez after Chelsea defeat

Former Arsenal winger Freddie Ljungberg said United’s players had let manager Michael Carrick down, singling out Martinez’s conduct at Stamford Bridge. “I feel sorry for Michael Carrick,” Ljungberg said, adding that the defender had not put the team first.

Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel also questioned Martinez’s recent form and comments, saying his performances had not been good enough. On Match of the Day, Danny Murphy described the defender as a “liability”.

United’s immediate focus is on their upcoming matches, with Carrick expected to remain in charge for the games against Roma and Aston Villa. The report suggests results could shape the manager’s position during the international break, while Martinez’s future may become another issue for the club to resolve.

For now, Atletico’s reported agreement with the player is only one step. Any move still depends on the clubs opening talks and reaching a deal.
