Fresh talks have opened the door to Marcus Rashford returning to Manchester United’s first-team squad after Barcelona opted against a permanent deal.
Marcus Rashford could yet remain a Manchester United player next season after fresh discussions reportedly reopened the possibility of his return to the first-team squad.
The England international is due back at Old Trafford following the end of his loan spell after Barcelona decided not to activate the €30 million (£26 million) option to sign him permanently. Although a permanent exit had appeared increasingly likely, the situation has now taken an unexpected turn.
According to the latest reports, representatives of Rashford and Manchester United have resumed dialogue, with both parties willing to assess whether the forward can be successfully reintegrated under new head coach Michael Carrick during pre-season.
Rather than forcing an immediate transfer, United are expected to include Rashford in their summer preparations before making a final decision later in the transfer window. The 28-year-old remains under contract until 2028, giving the club flexibility over his future.
An exit has not been ruled out, however. Should a suitable offer arrive during the summer, Manchester United would still be prepared to consider a transfer. Rashford himself is also understood to be open to evaluating his options once pre-season begins.
The change in circumstances follows a managerial reshuffle at Old Trafford, creating an opportunity for the academy graduate to rebuild his place within the squad after spending time away from the club.

Keeping Rashford could also solve an important tactical issue for United.
The club are believed to be exploring reinforcements on the left wing, but Rashford’s return would immediately provide an experienced natural option in that position. Patrick Dorgu and Matheus Cunha have both been used on the left, although neither is regarded as a specialist winger.
Following productive loan spells with Aston Villa and Barcelona, Rashford has rebuilt both his confidence and reputation. If he can carry that form back to Old Trafford, United may decide their priority should instead be strengthening other areas of the squad.
Midfield remains one department expected to receive attention, with reports continuing to link the club with a move for Mateus Fernandes.
For now, Rashford’s immediate focus is on reporting for pre-season, where his performances could ultimately determine whether his long association with Manchester United continues into the 2026-27 campaign.
