Brazil midfielder Bruno Guimaraes continued his outstanding World Cup form by inspiring Brazil’s win over Japan as Arsenal’s interest refuses to fade.

Bruno Guimaraes strengthened his reputation as one of Europe’s elite midfielders after producing another influential display in Brazil’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan at the FIFA World Cup.

The Newcastle United star provided the decisive assist for Gabriel Martinelli’s stoppage-time winner as Brazil booked their place in the last 16, taking his tournament tally to four assists — the highest of any player at this year’s competition.

Guimaraes has been one of Brazil’s standout performers throughout the tournament, combining defensive discipline with attacking creativity in a more advanced midfield role.

His latest contribution perfectly demonstrated the qualities that have attracted admiration from Arsenal. Receiving possession on the edge of the penalty area, the 28-year-old disguised his intentions before slipping an incisive pass into Martinelli’s path, allowing the Arsenal forward to score the winning goal deep into stoppage time.

The performance is likely to fuel further speculation over Arsenal’s long-standing interest in the Newcastle midfielder.

Since Sandro Tonali’s arrival at St James’ Park, Guimaraes has flourished in a more attack-minded position. Last season he registered 14 goal contributions in 31 Premier League appearances, underlining his growing influence in the final third.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is understood to be keen to strengthen his midfield options despite already boasting one of the strongest squads in England.

Declan Rice has been a near ever-present since joining from West Ham United, and Arsenal currently lack a natural replacement capable of offering the same blend of energy, ball-winning ability and technical quality.

Guimaraes would not only provide competition and cover for Rice but could also slot alongside the England international and captain Martin Ødegaard in a dynamic three-man midfield.

Newcastle are expected to demand a huge fee for one of their most valuable assets, with the Brazil international reportedly valued at around €93 million (£80 million).

Although Arsenal continue to prioritise strengthening other areas of the squad, including the left wing, Guimaraes remains a player capable of transforming an already formidable midfield.

His performances in the Premier League and now on the World Cup stage continue to underline why he is regarded as one of the world’s finest all-round midfielders, and Arsenal’s reported interest is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
