Chelsea are prepared to listen to offers for Alejandro Garnacho less than a year after signing the Argentina international from Manchester United, as the club continues a major squad rebuild under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
The 22-year-old joined the Blues in a £40 million move from Old Trafford last summer but struggled to establish himself during his first season at Stamford Bridge. Despite making 43 appearances in all competitions, Garnacho failed to secure a regular starting place under the club’s three different head coaches throughout the campaign.
Chelsea are now willing to sanction a permanent sale, although they are not interested in allowing the winger to leave on loan.
Reports in Italy have linked Serie A side Roma with Garnacho, but no club-to-club negotiations have taken place and Chelsea’s preference is to secure a full transfer rather than a temporary deal. The Argentine remains under contract until 2032, giving the club a strong position in any future negotiations.
Garnacho’s uncertain future forms part of a wider restructuring at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso is preparing for his first full season in charge and is expected to oversee significant changes to the squad as Chelsea look to reshape the team following another inconsistent campaign.
One of the club’s outgoing deals is already close to completion.
Academy graduate Tyrique George has completed a medical ahead of a permanent move to Everton after spending the second half of last season on loan at the Merseyside club.
Chelsea are set to receive £18 million upfront, with the agreement including a further £6 million in performance-related add-ons and a 15% sell-on clause, ensuring they retain an interest in the winger’s future development.
At the same time, Chelsea have strengthened their own attacking options.
Portuguese winger Geovany Quenda has arrived from Sporting CP and is expected to join Alonso’s squad when pre-season training begins. His ability to operate on either flank is viewed as a valuable asset as Chelsea seek greater flexibility in the final third.
Garnacho is not the only senior player who could depart before the transfer window closes.
Chelsea are also willing to consider offers for Trevoh Chalobah, Filip Jorgensen, Andrey Santos, Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernandez if suitable bids are received, highlighting the scale of the club’s planned overhaul this summer.
Despite his disappointing debut campaign, Garnacho remains a player with significant potential.
The Argentina international is still only 22 and has attracted interest from clubs across Europe. Chelsea will hope that demand for the winger increases in the coming weeks as they continue trimming the squad and generating funds to reinvest in Alonso’s project.
For now, however, the club’s position is clear: Garnacho can leave Stamford Bridge this summer, but only if a club is prepared to agree a permanent transfer.
