Former Arsenal, Chelsea and France midfielder Emmanuel Petit says he understands why Yan Diomande would favour a move to Paris Saint-Germain over Liverpool, while insisting Ibrahima Konaté has the quality to succeed at Real Madrid despite the huge expectations awaiting him.

Diomande has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after young attackers after an impressive campaign with RB Leipzig, attracting strong interest from Liverpool as the Reds look to rebuild their forward line following Mohamed Salah’s departure. However, recent reports suggest the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international would rather join the reigning European champions if he leaves Germany this summer.

Liverpool have been linked with an £86 million move for the winger, but Paris Saint-Germain are also firmly in the race and are believed to have convinced the teenager that the French capital offers the ideal environment for his development.

Petit admits the decision makes perfect sense.

The 1998 World Cup winner believes PSG’s recent transfer strategy and Luis Enrique’s willingness to rotate his squad make the Ligue 1 champions an attractive destination for one of Europe’s brightest young talents.

“Yan Diomande has great quality,” Petit said.

“Paris Saint-Germain have been great in the transfer market for the last two seasons. They sold Goncalo Ramos at a huge price, and Diomande has been a target for a long time.”

Petit added that PSG’s ambitions and the opportunity to compete regularly for the biggest trophies explain why the teenager appears to favour the French club.

“I am not surprised he wants to join PSG to win titles and fight for the Champions League every season under Luis Enrique.”

“I think he will have chances to play often. We saw how Luis Enrique had to manage many injured players and rotate the whole squad during the season. So I’m not surprised he has picked PSG over Liverpool.”

While Diomande’s future remains unresolved, Petit also reflected on another high-profile French international embarking on a new chapter.

Konaté completed his move to Real Madrid after leaving Liverpool at the end of his contract, bringing an end to a successful spell at Anfield that saw him make 183 appearances and win the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups.

The centre-back arrives in Madrid after a difficult period both at club level and with the French national team.

Petit acknowledged that Konaté endured a challenging season and pointed to his reduced role for France, where William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano have established themselves as the preferred central defensive pairing.

“It was a difficult season for Ibrahima Konate off the pitch and the whole defence at Liverpool was struggling,” Petit said.

“Konate lost his position in the national team. Against Norway, he was on the bench. Dayot Upamecano is the first choice with William Saliba.”

Despite those setbacks, Petit is confident his compatriot can thrive at the Santiago Bernabéu.

He warned that joining Real Madrid brings immediate pressure, particularly given the club’s recent defensive issues, but believes Konaté has already shown he possesses the ability to succeed at one of football’s biggest institutions.

“Joining Real Madrid with the pressure and defensive troubles they have means you have to perform straight away. He is joining probably the biggest club in the world.”

“It will be tough, but he has the quality. I believe in him and trust him. He was a regular first-team player for Liverpool for years, and it is a huge step for him going to Madrid, but I believe in his quality.”

For Liverpool, missing out on Diomande would represent another setback as Andoni Iraola continues reshaping the squad ahead of the new season.

Reports suggest the Reds are already exploring alternative attacking options should PSG ultimately win the race for the highly rated winger, ensuring their search for Salah’s long-term successor remains one of the club’s biggest priorities this summer.
