Arsenal are preparing to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães after reports emerged that the Brazilian has informed the Magpies he wants to leave St James’ Park and join the Premier League champions.

The Gunners are expected to submit a formal offer in the coming days as they look to strengthen Mikel Arteta’s midfield ahead of the new season. While Newcastle insist they have not yet received an official bid, Arsenal remain confident a deal can be completed despite the club’s public stance that their captain is not for sale.

Reports suggest Arsenal are preparing an opening proposal worth around £60 million, although Newcastle are expected to demand significantly more before entering negotiations. The Magpies are determined to retain one of their most influential players, but Guimarães’ reported desire to leave has increased the pressure on the club.

The 28-year-old has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers since arriving from Lyon in January 2022, becoming club captain and a fan favourite. However, following Newcastle’s failure to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, Guimarães is believed to view this summer as the ideal opportunity to compete regularly at Europe’s highest level.

Losing the Brazil international would represent another major setback for Eddie Howe after a period of significant squad changes. Newcastle have already sanctioned the departures of several high-profile players in recent transfer windows, and the loss of their captain would leave another sizeable gap to fill.

Arsenal see Guimarães as an ideal partner for Declan Rice, with Arteta eager to add another proven Premier League midfielder capable of dictating play while contributing defensively and offensively. The Brazilian remains one of Arsenal’s priority midfield targets alongside other options being monitored by sporting director Andrea Berta.

Despite Arsenal’s growing confidence, Newcastle are not expected to make negotiations easy. Guimarães remains under contract, and club officials are understood to be exploring ways to convince him to stay, although reports indicate he is not prepared to commit to fresh terms at this stage.

The coming weeks are likely to prove decisive as Arsenal prepare to test Newcastle’s resolve with what could become one of the biggest transfer sagas of the summer.
