Manchester United have taken the first steps towards signing Nottingham Forest full-back Neco Williams, but face competition from Newcastle United for one of the Premier League’s most consistent defenders.
According to BBC Sport senior football correspondent Sami Mokbel, both clubs have formally registered their interest in the Wales international, who is currently in talks over a new long-term contract with Forest. Despite those negotiations, rival Premier League clubs continue to monitor his situation closely.
Williams has established himself as a key player at the City Ground since joining from Liverpool in 2022. After leaving Anfield in search of regular first-team football, the 25-year-old has developed into one of Forest’s most reliable performers thanks to his ability to play on either flank of the defence while also contributing going forward.
Manchester United’s interest is driven by the need to strengthen both full-back positions ahead of the new season.
Luke Shaw remains the club’s first-choice left-back, but ongoing concerns over his fitness have prompted United to explore alternatives. Williams’ versatility would also provide additional competition for Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui on the right side of Michael Carrick’s defence.
Newcastle are also keeping a close eye on the defender as they continue evaluating defensive reinforcements during the summer transfer window.
Forest, however, are determined to retain one of their most valuable assets.
The club are understood to be confident Williams will agree fresh terms, although growing interest from several Premier League sides has complicated negotiations. Any club hoping to sign him is likely to face a substantial asking price given his importance to Forest and his long-term contract.
Williams has previously attracted attention from several top-flight clubs thanks to his experience in both domestic and international football. His pace, attacking instincts and positional flexibility make him an attractive option for sides looking to strengthen multiple areas of their defence with one signing.
While Manchester United have only made an initial approach at this stage, their interest underlines the club’s determination to reinforce the back line before the Premier League campaign begins.
Whether that interest develops into a formal bid may ultimately depend on the outcome of Williams’ ongoing contract discussions with Nottingham Forest.
