Barcelona ready to cash in on Ferran Torres as hidden Man City clause fuels Arsenal and Spurs hopes

A little-known payment to Manchester City has emerged as a key reason Barcelona are prepared to sell Ferran Torres despite his importance to the squad.

Barcelona’s willingness to sell Ferran Torres this summer appears to be driven by more than just his contract entering its final year, with a hidden clause linked to his move from Manchester City emerging as a major factor.

The Spain international has attracted interest from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, with reports suggesting he could be available for around €35 million (£29 million). At 26, Torres remains in his prime and has built an impressive record of 91 goals and 44 assists in 359 senior club appearances, while also becoming a regular for the Spanish national team.

Although his contract is winding down, fresh reports indicate Barcelona’s financial concerns extend beyond the risk of losing him on a free transfer.

According to The Athletic, the Catalan club would be required to pay Manchester City an additional €8 million if Torres signs a contract extension. The clause was included when Barcelona purchased the forward in 2022 and would increase the overall cost of the transfer to around €73 million, after the club had already paid an initial €55 million plus €10 million in performance-related add-ons.

With Barcelona continuing to manage financial constraints, avoiding that extra payment has reportedly become a significant consideration in their transfer strategy.

Selling Torres this summer would not only generate an immediate transfer fee but would also remove the possibility of triggering the additional payment owed to City, making an exit an increasingly attractive solution.

The situation has alerted several clubs across Europe.

Arsenal and Tottenham have both been credited with an interest in the versatile attacker, who is capable of playing as a central striker or on either wing. His versatility and experience at the highest level make him an appealing option for clubs seeking to strengthen their attacking options without paying premium prices.

Despite the speculation, Torres has remained focused on international duty with Spain and has avoided discussing his future publicly. The forward is expected to postpone any decision until after the FIFA World Cup concludes.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta recently attempted to play down the transfer rumours, insisting the club remain happy with the quality available in their squad. However, reports continue to suggest Torres is among the players who could be sacrificed as the club looks to balance its finances and reshape its attack ahead of the new season.

Should Barcelona officially place Torres on the market, Arsenal and Tottenham are expected to assess whether to formalise their interest, with the player’s combination of experience, versatility and relatively modest asking price making him one of the most intriguing attacking options available this summer.
