Arsenal have renewed their pursuit of Nico Williams as Mikel Arteta looks to add an elite left winger before the summer transfer window closes, with the Athletic Club star once again emerging as one of the club’s leading attacking targets.

The Gunners have reopened discussions over the Spain international after suffering setbacks in their attempts to sign Morgan Rogers and Bradley Barcola. Sporting director Andrea Berta is understood to have revisited Williams’ situation as Arsenal explore whether a deal can finally be completed this summer.

Williams arrives on the back of another major international success after helping Spain win the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 23-year-old came off the bench in both the semi-final and the final, providing the decisive assist for Ferran Torres’ extra-time winner against Argentina to underline his quality on football’s biggest stage.

Although injuries disrupted much of his club campaign with Athletic Club, limiting his starts in LaLiga, Williams recovered in time to earn Luis de la Fuente’s trust and once again demonstrated why he is regarded as one of Europe’s brightest wide forwards.

Arsenal have admired Williams for several years. The winger was heavily linked with Barcelona before committing his future to Athletic Club, signing a long-term contract that reportedly includes a £77 million (€90m) release clause. That figure is considered within Arsenal’s financial reach should they decide to activate it.

The renewed interest comes after Arsenal were beaten by Chelsea in the race to sign Morgan Rogers, while uncertainty continues to surround a potential move for Paris Saint-Germain winger Bradley Barcola. With both pursuits proving difficult, Williams has moved back towards the top of Arsenal’s shortlist.

Berta believes Williams possesses the pace, creativity and direct attacking style Arsenal have been seeking on the left flank. Across his senior career with Athletic Club, the Spain international has contributed 37 goals and 37 assists in 199 appearances, highlighting his growing influence despite his age.

Reports from Spain also suggest Williams would be open to a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal viewed as an attractive destination if he decides this is the right time to leave Bilbao. However, no formal bid has yet been submitted, and the club continue to assess several attacking options before making their final decision.

For now, Arsenal’s focus remains on strengthening the left side of Arteta’s attack, and Nico Williams has once again become one of the standout names under serious consideration as the transfer window enters its decisive phase.
