Manchester United have taken the next step in their pursuit of Roma midfielder Manu Koné after opening formal discussions with the Serie A club over a potential summer transfer. The France international has emerged as one of United’s leading midfield targets as the club continues strengthening its squad ahead of the new campaign.

According to reports from France, United have contacted Roma to establish the conditions of a deal and have learned that the Italian club would be willing to sell the 25-year-old for around €60 million (£51 million). Negotiations remain at an early stage, but there is growing optimism that a deal could be struck.

United’s interest in Koné comes after the club opted against pursuing several expensive midfield targets earlier in the transfer window. Having already strengthened the department with the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, the Premier League side are now searching for a more defensive-minded midfielder to complete their rebuild.

Koné has climbed to the top of that shortlist thanks to his ball-winning ability, athleticism and impressive performances for both Roma and the France national team. Reports suggest Manchester United currently lead Arsenal in the race for his signature, with the Gunners also monitoring the midfielder’s situation.

The player’s willingness to move to the Premier League has further encouraged United. It is understood Koné is open to testing himself in England, although no agreement has yet been reached between the clubs over a transfer fee or personal terms.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has also reported that Manchester United have spoken with Koné’s representatives to assess his interest, while the club continue to evaluate the financial aspects of any deal.

Despite the positive developments, United are expected to remain disciplined in negotiations. Club officials are determined not to overpay and will only proceed if Roma’s demands fit within their valuation, having already demonstrated a willingness to walk away from deals they consider too expensive earlier this summer.

With Roma prepared to listen to offers and Koné reportedly interested in a Premier League move, Manchester United appear well placed to secure another major midfield signing. However, the final outcome is likely to depend on whether both clubs can agree on a fee that satisfies all parties.
