Cristian Romero appears increasingly likely to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with Inter Milan stepping up their pursuit of the club captain as negotiations over a return to Serie A gather momentum.
The Serie A champions have opened direct discussions with both Tottenham and the 28-year-old’s representatives, identifying the World Cup-winning defender as their priority target to strengthen their back line ahead of the new campaign. While negotiations remain at an early stage, Inter are understood to have temporarily paused their pursuit of alternative centre-backs as they focus on securing Romero’s signature.
Talks are expected to continue next week, although Tottenham’s valuation remains a significant hurdle. Spurs are believed to want around €50 million (£43 million) before sanctioning the sale of one of their most influential players.
Romero has spent five seasons in north London, making 156 appearances and scoring 13 goals while establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most aggressive and accomplished central defenders. Despite wearing the captain’s armband, sources indicate the Argentina international is open to a fresh challenge after a turbulent spell at the club.
Although Inter currently lead the race, they are not alone in their admiration for the defender.
Barcelona continue to monitor Romero’s situation but would first need to offload an existing centre-back before they could make a serious move because of financial constraints. Romero has long been attracted by the prospect of playing in La Liga, making the Catalan giants a particularly appealing option should they enter the race formally.
Atlético Madrid also remain interested. Diego Simeone has admired Romero for several years and believes the defender’s combative style would be an ideal fit for his system. However, the Spanish club have yet to submit a formal offer.
Tottenham are in a strong negotiating position thanks to Romero’s contract, which runs until 2029, allowing the club to resist offers below their asking price. New manager Roberto De Zerbi has already strengthened his defence with the arrival of Jan Paul van Hecke, a move widely viewed as preparation for Romero’s potential departure.
Inter are reportedly hoping to negotiate a lower fee than Tottenham’s valuation, meaning further discussions will be required before an agreement can be reached. However, with Romero seemingly ready for a new chapter and Spurs willing to listen to suitable offers, a transfer appears increasingly possible before the window closes.
Should Romero leave, Tottenham are expected to appoint James Maddison as the club’s new captain, marking another significant change as De Zerbi reshapes his squad ahead of the new season.
