Liverpool are prepared to play the long game in their pursuit of Vinícius Júnior, with reports in Spain claiming the Premier League champions would only consider a move if the Real Madrid forward becomes a free agent in 2027.
The Brazil international remains under contract at the Santiago Bernabéu until the summer of 2027, but negotiations over an extension have yet to reach a breakthrough. While both Real Madrid and Vinícius have publicly expressed a desire to continue their partnership, discussions over a new deal are reportedly progressing slowly.
Liverpool’s interest in the 26-year-old is not new. Earlier this year, reports suggested intermediaries had made contact with the Merseyside club to gauge whether they would be interested if the winger became available. The Reds have continued to monitor developments as uncertainty over the player’s long-term future persists.
According to Spanish journalist Ramón Álvarez de Mon, Vinícius’ representatives have quietly sounded out several leading Premier League clubs while contract negotiations remain unresolved. He claims Liverpool responded positively—but only under one condition: they would pursue a deal if the Brazilian leaves Real Madrid on a free transfer in 2027 rather than paying a substantial transfer fee.
Álvarez de Mon believes Liverpool’s stance reflects the club’s financial strategy. Signing one of the world’s elite forwards without a transfer fee would allow the Reds to offer a salary package befitting a player of Vinícius’ stature while avoiding the enormous outlay Real Madrid would likely demand in a traditional transfer.
The journalist also suggested that no significant progress has been made in renewal talks between the player and Real Madrid.
He said the official position from both sides remains that they want to continue together, but claimed there is still a gap to bridge before an agreement can be reached. As a result, Vinícius’ camp is continuing to assess what options could be available elsewhere should negotiations remain at a standstill.
