Chelsea have made a fresh enquiry about signing Arsenal academy star Myles Lewis-Skelly as uncertainty grows over his role at the Emirates following the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes.
The Blues have tracked Lewis-Skelly for some time and have now checked again on the 19-year-old’s availability. Chelsea were also linked with the versatile England player during the January transfer window.
However, Arsenal are reluctant to strengthen a direct London rival they expect to compete against near the top of the Premier League.
The renewed interest comes after Arsenal completed the £75 million signing of Brazil midfielder Guimaraes from Newcastle United. His arrival has increased competition in an already crowded midfield and raised fresh questions about how many opportunities Lewis-Skelly will receive.
Manchester United are another club with a long-standing interest in the Arsenal youngster. Reports indicate that United are still considering whether to recruit another midfielder or left-back before the transfer deadline, with Lewis-Skelly capable of operating in both positions.
Whether United would have sufficient room to complete another significant transfer is another question following their summer business.
For Arsenal, Lewis-Skelly’s situation presents a difficult transfer decision.
The Gunners spent heavily while keeping their squad largely intact last season. They intend to remain ambitious in the market but recognise that player sales may be required to balance further recruitment.
Selling academy graduates such as Lewis-Skelly or Ethan Nwaneri would be particularly lucrative from an accounting perspective because transfer fees received for homegrown players can be recorded as pure profit. Arsenal had already identified the pair as players whose potential sales could provide that financial benefit.
But Lewis-Skelly’s importance to Mikel Arteta changed dramatically towards the end of Arsenal’s title-winning campaign.
After struggling for Premier League starts earlier in the season, Arteta deployed him in midfield during the crucial run-in. Lewis-Skelly responded with an influential performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 victory over Fulham and retained his midfield place for the remainder of the campaign, including the Champions League final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
His versatility has also been evident at left-back. During his breakthrough campaign in 2024/25, Lewis-Skelly featured in defence during Arsenal’s memorable Champions League quarter-final victory over Real Madrid.
The dilemma has become more complicated following Guimaraes’ arrival. Arsenal can now choose from Declan Rice, Guimaraes, Martin Zubimendi, Mikel Merino and Lewis-Skelly for central midfield roles.
Lewis-Skelly could nevertheless remain valuable because of the workload placed on Rice. His ability to cover midfield and left-back also gives Arteta flexibility across a demanding domestic and European schedule.
Any departure would therefore represent a significant call for Arsenal — particularly if one of their most highly rated academy products were allowed to join a Premier League rival.
