Tottenham rule out Micky van de Ven sale amid Liverpool interest

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly decided they will not entertain offers for Micky van de Ven despite growing speculation linking the defender with Liverpool.

The Reds are understood to be monitoring Van de Ven as they prepare for the eventual departure of captain Virgil van Dijk, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

However, Tottenham are relaxed about the situation after handing Van de Ven a new long-term contract and making him their captain during the summer.

Tottenham have no plans to sell Van de Ven

According to Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, Tottenham have no intention of selling the Netherlands international in January or next summer.

Spurs strengthened their position in August when Van de Ven signed a new deal, widely reported to run until 2031.

The 25-year-old was also appointed Tottenham captain for the 2026/27 season, underlining his importance to the club’s long-term plans.

“Tottenham are quite relaxed about this,” O’Rourke said.

“They tied down Van de Ven to a new contract in August until 2031. Tottenham hold all the aces here, he’s been made club captain as well, so I can’t imagine they’ll be too keen to lose such a key player.

“Tottenham won’t be entertaining a sale anytime soon.”

Van de Ven said Spurs felt like home after signing his new contract and expressed his belief in the direction the club was taking.

Liverpool reportedly monitoring Spurs captain

CaughtOffside previously reported that Liverpool and Manchester United were closely monitoring Van de Ven, with the Reds’ interest described as particularly significant.

Liverpool are preparing for life after Van Dijk, who signed a two-year extension in April 2025 but will be out of contract next summer.

The Dutchman will turn 36 in July 2027, making the recruitment of a younger left-sided centre-back an important consideration for Liverpool.

Van de Ven’s pace, ability to defend in large spaces and Premier League experience would make him a natural candidate. He also regularly plays alongside Van Dijk for the Netherlands.

However, there has been no confirmation that Liverpool have approached Tottenham or submitted an offer. The reported interest is understood to remain at the monitoring stage.

Huge fee would be required

Industry sources cited by CaughtOffside have suggested Van de Ven could be valued at between £80million and £90million following his contract extension.

A transfer at the upper end of that range would surpass the £80million Manchester United paid Leicester City for Harry Maguire in 2019, making Van de Ven the most expensive defender in football history.

Tottenham have not publicly placed a price tag on their captain, however, and their reported refusal to consider a sale means even an offer within that range might not be enough.

Van de Ven’s new contract, captaincy and importance to Tottenham leave the north London club in a powerful negotiating position.

Unless the player pushes for a departure or Liverpool produce an exceptional offer, Spurs appear determined to build their defence around him for years to come.
