Manchester United’s summer rebuild is gathering pace, with reports claiming the club’s next major target is Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali after securing the signing of Ederson from Atalanta.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that all paperwork for Ederson’s move to Old Trafford has now been completed, describing the transfer as “100 per cent confirmed.” The Brazilian midfielder is expected to become United’s first signing of the summer in a deal worth €45 million, including add-ons.
But United’s business in midfield may be far from over.
According to reports in Italy and England, Michael Carrick’s side are determined to strengthen the centre of the pitch further and have identified Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali as a priority target. Tonali is believed to rank highly on United’s shortlist, with claims suggesting he is one of Carrick’s preferred options for the role.
The Red Devils are reportedly confident enough to explore a deal despite Newcastle’s reluctance to lose one of their most influential players. Reports suggest United could be willing to submit an offer worth between £70 million and £80 million, although Newcastle are believed to value the Italy international closer to the £100 million mark.
Tonali has become one of the Premier League’s most admired midfielders since arriving from AC Milan in 2023. His performances have also attracted interest from other top clubs, with Arsenal and Manchester City both linked with the Italian in recent weeks.
United’s desire to add another midfielder comes amid uncertainty surrounding several current squad members. Reports indicate the club expects further departures in the engine room, creating room for additional arrivals as Carrick reshapes the squad ahead of a return to Champions League football.
While Ederson’s arrival appears to be a done deal, any move for Tonali is likely to prove significantly more complicated. Newcastle remain under no pressure to sell and are expected to demand a premium fee for one of their prized assets.
For now, United supporters can celebrate the imminent arrival of Ederson, but attention is already turning to whether INEOS can pull off one of the biggest midfield transfers of the summer by prising Tonali away from St James’ Park.
