Fresh fears for Christian Eriksen as former teammate raises retirement question

Andros Townsend admits latest collapse could force Denmark star to rethink his football future

Former Tottenham winger Andros Townsend has admitted he fears Christian Eriksen may now have to consider retirement after the Denmark midfielder suffered another frightening collapse during an international match.

The 34-year-old was receiving treatment after suddenly falling to the ground during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine. The match was abandoned as medical staff rushed to assist the former Manchester United and Tottenham playmaker.

Thankfully, Eriksen regained consciousness quickly and was able to leave the pitch under his own power before being taken to hospital for further assessment. Denmark’s team doctor later confirmed the midfielder was stable and doing well.

The incident immediately reignited concerns over Eriksen’s long-term future in football, five years after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark’s Euro 2020 clash against Finland.

Following that medical emergency, Eriksen was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), allowing him to resume his playing career. He returned to action with Brentford before joining Manchester United and later moving to German side Wolfsburg.

Speaking after the latest scare, Townsend revealed his concern for his former Tottenham teammate and questioned whether Eriksen should continue playing professionally.

Townsend said the midfielder had already overcome one of football’s most remarkable recoveries following his cardiac arrest and suggested that health and family considerations may now outweigh any desire to continue playing.

The former England international stressed that only Eriksen and medical specialists can ultimately make that decision, but admitted the latest collapse would inevitably raise serious questions about the player’s future.

Eriksen was making his 151st appearance for Denmark when the incident occurred. He had enjoyed another productive season with Wolfsburg, featuring in 34 matches during the 2025-26 campaign.

Denmark coach Brian Riemer later reassured supporters that Eriksen was conscious and had already sent messages to teammates from hospital. Players from both Denmark and Ukraine formed a protective circle around him while medics treated him, echoing the scenes witnessed during the European Championship in 2021.

While doctors continue to investigate the cause of the latest incident, concern remains widespread across the football world for one of the game’s most respected figures.

For now, the focus remains firmly on Eriksen’s recovery rather than any decision over his playing future, although renewed debate over retirement appears inevitable after another alarming health scare on the pitch.
