Man Utd handed huge Mateus Fernandes boost as Real Madrid back away

West Ham's £80m valuation reportedly proves too much for Jose Mourinho's Real Madrid

Manchester United’s pursuit of Mateus Fernandes has reportedly received a significant boost after Real Madrid decided they will not meet West Ham United’s £80 million valuation for the Portuguese midfielder.

Fernandes has emerged as one of United’s leading transfer targets this summer as Michael Carrick looks to strengthen his midfield ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.

The Red Devils have already secured a deal for Atalanta star Ederson Silva, but recruitment plans in the centre of the park are far from complete.

TEAMtalk previously revealed that United held discussions with Fernandes’ representatives in May and that the player was highly interested in a move to Old Trafford.

Since then, Real Madrid have entered the picture.

New Real boss Jose Mourinho is believed to be a strong admirer of his fellow Portuguese international and has reportedly identified Fernandes as a potential addition to his rebuilding project at the Santiago Bernabeu.

However, the Spanish giants appear unwilling to match West Ham’s asking price.

According to reports in Spain, Real Madrid consider the £80 million valuation excessive and have no intention of reaching that figure despite their interest in the player.

The report claims Madrid are monitoring the situation but believe Premier League clubs are more likely to satisfy West Ham’s demands.

That stance could leave Manchester United in pole position.

Sources indicate United remain confident of completing a deal despite knowing their opening offer will fall short of West Ham’s valuation.

Rather than ending negotiations, the initial bid is expected to kick-start detailed discussions between the clubs as United attempt to reach a compromise.

There is growing optimism at Old Trafford that Fernandes could become the club’s second major signing of the summer.

West Ham are determined not to sell cheaply despite their relegation to the Championship.

The Hammers view Fernandes as one of their most valuable assets and are expected to hold firm during negotiations.

The 21-year-old only joined the London club from Southampton last summer but quickly established himself as one of the most promising young midfielders in English football.

His performances have attracted attention from several top clubs, but Manchester United believe they hold a strong position in the race.

With Real Madrid unwilling to match West Ham’s demands and the player reportedly keen on a move to Old Trafford, United’s hopes of securing Fernandes appear to be gathering momentum.

Negotiations are expected to intensify in the coming weeks as Carrick looks to add another high-profile midfielder to his squad before the new season begins.
