England midfielder Jude Bellingham has responded to his critics after helping the Three Lions open their 2026 World Cup campaign with an entertaining 4-2 victory over Croatia.
The Real Madrid star delivered another influential display in Dallas, scoring one of England’s goals and playing a key role in a performance that strengthened his reputation as one of the team’s most important players.
However, it was Bellingham’s comments after the match that attracted attention as he addressed the scrutiny that has surrounded him in recent months.
The 22-year-old admitted that criticism comes with the territory of being a high-profile footballer and acknowledged that there are times when it is justified.
“Personally, it was nice to put some of the noise aside and just show my country and my teammates how committed I am to helping us try to win games,” Bellingham said.
“Contributing, helping my team and helping my country are some of the greatest honours, and regardless of the noise outside, that honour doesn’t change for me at all.”
Bellingham has become one of the most talked-about players in world football following his success with Real Madrid and England. As a result, every performance is closely analysed and often debated.
Rather than rejecting criticism outright, the midfielder took a measured approach.
“I know it’s part of being a footballer; I don’t hold a grudge against anyone who says bad things about me because sometimes I do deserve it,” he added.
“Today I think it was nice to try to show people and remind them who I am.”

His display against Croatia was about far more than his goal.
Bellingham’s energy in midfield helped England gain control after a chaotic first half. He pressed aggressively, tracked runners and repeatedly disrupted Croatia’s attempts to build attacks through the centre of the pitch.
The performance underlined why England manager Thomas Tuchel views him as a cornerstone of his World Cup plans.
Bellingham was also asked about reports of tension within the England camp after television cameras captured an animated exchange between Tuchel and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford shortly before half-time.
The midfielder dismissed any suggestion of dressing-room unrest and revealed that the manager’s message during the interval was calm rather than confrontational.
“It wasn’t one of those where it was a big drama or standing up and shouting; it was what the team needed,” Bellingham explained.
“We have a mature group with great leaders in there; everyone knew the level we had to get to. The start of the second half gave us a great platform.”
England recovered from a difficult end to the first half to score twice after the break and secure all three points in their opening Group L fixture.
The victory leaves Tuchel’s side well positioned heading into their next match against Ghana on June 23, with Bellingham once again expected to play a central role.
For now, though, the midfielder appears content to let his performances do the talking.
After another influential night on the World Cup stage, Bellingham sent a clear message to his critics while reinforcing his value to England’s hopes of lifting the trophy.
