Tottenham join Man Utd race for £80m West Ham star Mateus Fernandes

Manchester United's refusal to meet West Ham's asking price has opened the door for Tottenham to launch their own move.

Manchester United’s pursuit of West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes has hit a significant obstacle, with the club unwilling to meet the Hammers’ £80 million valuation and now facing fresh competition from Tottenham Hotspur.

Fernandes has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in the transfer market following an outstanding individual campaign, despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League. The Portuguese star remains one of the club’s most valuable assets and has been granted permission to explore a move away from the London Stadium this summer.

Manchester United have been leading the race for the midfielder for several weeks and remain in regular contact with both the player’s representatives and West Ham. However, negotiations have stalled over the transfer fee, with the Red Devils reluctant to meet the Hammers’ asking price.

While United are believed to remain confident of securing a deal, they are hoping West Ham will lower their demands as the transfer window progresses. The Old Trafford hierarchy reportedly view £80 million as excessive and would prefer a package closer to £70 million, including performance-related bonuses.

That cautious approach could now create an opening for Tottenham.

According to reports, Spurs have entered the race for Fernandes at the request of manager Roberto De Zerbi, who sees the Portuguese international as a key addition to his midfield plans. Tottenham’s interest is understood to be separate from their ongoing pursuit of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, suggesting De Zerbi is keen to strengthen the centre of the pitch with multiple high-profile signings.

The growing interest from north London has added urgency to United’s plans. Although the player is believed to be open to a move to Old Trafford and discussions have already taken place, no agreement has yet been reached between the clubs.

Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell has explained that United’s reluctance to make a second bid is largely financial. Speaking recently, Whitwell suggested the club are deliberately taking their time rather than rushing into negotiations that could inflate the final fee.

The strategy is based on the belief that West Ham’s position could soften if no bidding war develops. However, Tottenham’s arrival threatens to undermine that plan and could force United back to the negotiating table sooner than expected.

Despite the uncertainty, Fernandes remains one of United’s priority targets as they continue rebuilding their midfield ahead of another Champions League campaign.

For West Ham, the situation is straightforward. The club are willing to sell, but only if their valuation is met. Whether Manchester United, Tottenham or another interested club is prepared to pay that figure could determine one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer.
