Liverpool could have been handed an unexpected opportunity to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes after Atletico Madrid reportedly abandoned plans to bring the Brazilian to Spain.

The La Liga club had been strongly linked with Gomes in recent weeks and were expected to make the 24-year-old one of their priority midfield signings following Wolves’ relegation from the Premier League. However, Atletico have now switched their attention to Sporting CP captain Morten Hjulmand, effectively ending their pursuit of the Brazil international.

The change in direction has reopened the race for Gomes, with Liverpool among the clubs previously credited with admiring the energetic midfielder. Reports suggest the Reds have monitored his progress for some time and could now have a clearer path if they decide to make a move.

Gomes has never hidden his admiration for Liverpool.

In a previous interview with ESPN Brazil, the midfielder admitted Anfield would be his dream destination.

“Liverpool is a team I would play for. I have the greatest desire to play. Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family.”

Those comments are likely to fuel further speculation if Liverpool enter the market for another central midfielder this summer.

Since arriving from Flamengo in 2023, Gomes has developed into one of Wolves’ standout performers. Despite the club’s relegation, he impressed with his energy, tackling and ball-winning ability, earning regular international recognition with Brazil.

Liverpool are believed to be assessing midfield options as they continue reshaping the squad under Andoni Iraola.

The club have been linked with several central midfielders during the transfer window, and Gomes’ experience in the Premier League, combined with the possibility of securing him for a reduced fee following Wolves’ relegation, could make him an attractive option.

Liverpool have a strong history of recruiting standout performers from relegated clubs, having previously signed Andy Robertson, Georginio Wijnaldum and Xherdan Shaqiri after their respective teams dropped out of the Premier League.

Whether the Reds decide to pursue Gomes remains to be seen, but Atletico Madrid’s withdrawal has undoubtedly increased the chances of another club making a move before the transfer window closes.
