The Gunners are preparing to open formal talks after agreeing personal terms with the Brazilian midfielder, while Eddie Howe faces another battle to keep his squad together.

Arsenal are expected to intensify their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimarães in the coming days, with growing confidence that negotiations could accelerate despite a significant gap between the two clubs’ valuations.

The Brazil international has emerged as one of Arsenal’s leading midfield targets this summer, and reports indicate he has already agreed personal terms with Mikel Arteta’s side. The remaining obstacle is reaching an agreement with Newcastle over a transfer fee.

Guimarães is understood to be keen on a move to north London after becoming increasingly frustrated with Newcastle’s direction. Reports from Brazil claim the midfielder believes he has achieved everything possible at St James’ Park and now wants the opportunity to compete consistently for major honours and in the UEFA Champions League.

His concerns have reportedly intensified following Newcastle’s high-profile departures over the past year. The exits of Alexander Isak to Liverpool, Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur are said to have left Guimarães questioning the club’s ambitions, particularly as he believes those losses have not been adequately replaced.

According to reports, Guimarães also held discussions with manager Eddie Howe towards the end of last season, making it clear he wanted to see greater progress if he was to remain at the club. Brazil’s early exit from the World Cup has since allowed his representatives to accelerate talks over his future.

While Arsenal are expected to submit an opening offer of around £70 million, sources suggest the north London club believe a package worth approximately £80 million could ultimately be enough to secure the 28-year-old’s signature. Arsenal are also understood to favour a deal based largely on guaranteed payments rather than performance-related add-ons.

Newcastle, however, remain publicly adamant that their captain is not for sale.

The Magpies have dismissed suggestions they would accept offers in the region of £60 million, with well-placed sources indicating they would only seriously consider negotiations if bids approached £100 million.

Despite the sizeable difference in valuation, there is optimism that discussions between the clubs will gather pace, with Guimarães continuing to make Arsenal his preferred destination.

Former Everton manager Sean Dyche believes Eddie Howe is facing one of the biggest challenges of his Newcastle tenure as speculation surrounding key players continues.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Dyche said it would be difficult for Howe to watch the squad he has built begin to break apart after years of progress.

He also argued that modern football increasingly favours players seeking transfers, making it harder for clubs to retain stars who have attracted interest elsewhere. According to Dyche, clubs are often forced to offer improved contracts to unhappy players or risk dealing with unsettled dressing rooms if transfer requests are rejected.

With Arsenal preparing their next move and Guimarães pushing for the transfer, Newcastle now face a crucial decision as they attempt to keep hold of one of their most influential players ahead of the new season.
