Inter Milan are set to make another attempt to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones as negotiations between the two clubs continue, with the Premier League champions standing firm over their asking price.
The Italian champions have identified Jones as one of their priority midfield targets and have been pursuing the England international since the January transfer window. Despite that long-standing interest, Liverpool have rejected two approaches, the latest worth around £21 million.
Inter believe their valuation is reasonable given Jones has just one year remaining on his contract at Anfield. Liverpool, however, are unwilling to accept a cut-price deal and continue to value the 25-year-old at around £34 million, citing the soaring transfer fees being paid for midfielders across the Premier League this summer.
Although Liverpool are prepared to negotiate, sources indicate they do not intend to sanction a sale for less than £30 million.
Inter are now expected to return with an improved proposal worth about £25 million and could increase that figure further if talks progress. However, there remains a significant gap between the two clubs’ valuations.
Jones is understood to be receptive to the continued interest from the Nerazzurri. The midfielder reportedly appreciates Inter’s determination after multiple rejected bids and is open to the prospect of moving to the San Siro this summer.
While the Liverpool academy graduate is willing to compete for a regular place under new head coach Andoni Iraola, he is believed to feel that a move to Italy would offer a greater opportunity for consistent first-team football.
Liverpool have also settled on their transfer strategy should Jones leave before the end of the window.
The Reds are currently satisfied with their midfield options if Jones remains at the club and do not consider signing another central midfielder to be a priority. However, that position will change if the England international is sold.
Should Jones complete a move away from Anfield, Liverpool are expected to enter the market to recruit a replacement before the transfer deadline. Until then, the club’s focus remains on retaining the midfielder unless Inter meet their valuation.
