Mohamed Salah’s future remains one of football’s biggest transfer stories, with a surprise Major League Soccer club emerging as a contender to sign the Liverpool legend following his departure from Anfield.

The 34-year-old became a free agent after ending a remarkable nine-year spell with Liverpool, where he scored 257 goals in 442 appearances and established himself as one of the greatest players in the club’s history. Since leaving Merseyside, Salah has been carefully considering his next destination rather than rushing into a decision.

While Saudi Pro League clubs have long been regarded as favourites to secure his signature, Major League Soccer is increasingly optimistic it can lure the Egypt captain to the United States. Inter Miami and San Diego FC have already been linked with Salah, but Sporting Kansas City have now entered the race in a move few expected.

Reports suggest Sporting KC’s interest is being driven by the club’s ambitious ownership. Majority owner Peter Mallouk, whose family has Egyptian roots, is keen to transform the franchise and views Salah as the marquee signing capable of elevating the club’s profile. Sporting currently have a Designated Player spot available and are looking to make a statement after a disappointing MLS campaign.

The club is also pursuing other attacking reinforcements, but Salah would represent one of the biggest signings in MLS history if a deal could be completed. Despite that ambition, reports indicate a move to Kansas City remains a long shot, with competition from Europe and Saudi Arabia still strong.

Salah’s future is expected to become clearer following Egypt’s exit from the FIFA World Cup, where the Pharaohs were eliminated by Argentina in the Round of 16. With his international commitments over, discussions surrounding his next club are likely to accelerate.

Meanwhile, any hopes of a dramatic return to Liverpool appear to have been firmly dismissed.

According to The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce, there is virtually no chance of Salah reversing his decision to leave Anfield. Pearce said all parties agreed it was the right time to part ways after Salah initiated discussions that led to Liverpool ending the final year of his contract early, and the subsequent managerial change from Arne Slot to Andoni Iraola has not altered that position.

Liverpool are instead focused on planning for life after Salah, with the club actively searching for a long-term replacement as one of the Premier League’s greatest modern forwards prepares to begin the next chapter of his career.
