Chelsea are working on a surprise deal to sign Jordan Henderson from Brentford, with the Blues emerging as the frontrunners to land the experienced England midfielder as Xabi Alonso looks to add proven leadership to his squad.
Brentford are prepared to allow the 36-year-old to leave on a free transfer, even though he still has just under 12 months remaining on the two-year contract he signed last summer. Henderson is understood to be open to the move, and Chelsea are currently ahead of several other Premier League clubs interested in his signature.
The move would represent a significant shift in Chelsea’s transfer strategy under their ownership. Since BlueCo took control of the club, Chelsea have focused heavily on recruiting young players with long-term potential. However, Alonso is now seeking to balance his youthful squad with experienced professionals capable of providing leadership both on and off the pitch.
Chelsea are also exploring a move for Danny Welbeck, another experienced Premier League campaigner, having previously failed in an attempt to sign Granit Xhaka earlier this summer. The pursuit of Henderson reinforces the club’s desire to add veteran figures to the dressing room.
Henderson joined Brentford from Ajax in 2025 and enjoyed an impressive debut season in west London. He made 32 Premier League appearances, scoring once and contributing three assists as the Bees narrowly missed out on European qualification.
The former Liverpool captain also travelled with England to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, although his tournament was cut short after suffering a broken radius during celebrations following the Three Lions’ last-16 victory over Mexico. Despite the injury, his experience and leadership continued to be highly valued within the England camp.
Chelsea believe Henderson’s winning mentality could prove invaluable to a squad that has often been criticised for lacking experienced leaders. During his time at Liverpool, Henderson captained the club to Premier League and Champions League glory and won eight major trophies before leaving Anfield in 2023.
Although Henderson is not expected to arrive as a guaranteed starter, Chelsea view him as someone who can raise standards in training, mentor younger players and provide reliable cover in midfield throughout the season.
Should the deal be completed, Henderson would become one of several experienced additions targeted by Alonso as he reshapes Chelsea’s squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
