Liverpool have stepped up their pursuit of Bradley Barcola by opening discussions with Paris Saint-Germain over a potential summer transfer, although the Premier League champions have already made it clear they will not pay the French club’s eye-watering £140 million asking price.
The Reds have identified the 23-year-old France international as one of their leading attacking targets and are optimistic about the player’s willingness to make the move to Anfield. Reports indicate Barcola is open to joining Liverpool and views the Merseyside club as his preferred destination should an agreement be reached between the two clubs.
Negotiations are expected to intensify this week, with Liverpool weighing up an opening offer while continuing to assess PSG’s demands. However, club officials have no intention of matching the French champions’ valuation, believing there is room for compromise.
Liverpool’s interest in Barcola stretches back more than a year, and the club is understood to believe PSG’s current valuation far exceeds previous expectations. Last summer, Barcola was reportedly valued at around £75 million, but a booming transfer market and a series of record-breaking Premier League deals have dramatically inflated his price.
PSG’s stance has also been influenced by recent blockbuster transfers, including Morgan Rogers’ £117 million move to Chelsea, with the French side determined to maximise the value of one of Europe’s most highly rated young wingers.
Despite the financial obstacle, Liverpool have received encouragement from the player’s camp. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Barcola is prepared to prioritise Liverpool’s project if the clubs can agree a fee, while Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg says personal terms are not expected to present any difficulties.
Barcola’s future at PSG has become increasingly uncertain after contract extension talks stalled. The winger has reportedly decided against signing a new deal, leaving him with two years remaining on his current contract and raising the possibility of a summer departure.
The France international is believed to be seeking a bigger role after slipping down Luis Enrique’s attacking pecking order, with increased competition for places reducing his playing time. PSG are reportedly willing to consider offers if their valuation is met.
Liverpool are not alone in monitoring the situation. Bayern Munich and Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in Barcola, although neither club has yet made a formal move. Liverpool are currently regarded as the frontrunners should PSG soften their position on the transfer fee.
