Manchester United have suffered an early setback in their pursuit of Lewis Hall after Newcastle United informed them the England international is not for sale.
The Red Devils recently made an initial enquiry for the 21-year-old full-back as they continue their search for a long-term successor to Luke Shaw, but Newcastle immediately rejected the approach and reiterated their intention to keep Hall at St James’ Park.
Hall has been on Manchester United’s shortlist since March, with the club identifying him as one of the Premier League’s brightest young left-backs.
Michael Carrick is keen to strengthen the left side of his defence after Tyrell Malacia left the club earlier this summer, leaving Shaw as United’s only senior specialist left-back.
Despite Newcastle’s disappointing campaign and significant changes behind the scenes, the club remain determined to retain Hall.
The Magpies have already sanctioned several high-profile departures this summer and are also looking to recruit another full-back, making Hall an even more important part of their long-term plans. He still has three years remaining on his current contract.
Manchester United believe Hall fits the profile of the modern full-back they want to build around.
The England international is admired for his technical ability, attacking instincts and versatility, but Newcastle have made it clear they have no intention of entering negotiations at this stage.
Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie revealed that Hall has been viewed as a realistic target for several months.
“We first reported Hall’s name in March, and a lot of people raised an eyebrow.
“Hall is someone they really admire.
“Newcastle wouldn’t be happy to lose Hall, but I wouldn’t say from a Newcastle perspective that he’s irreplaceable.
“From Manchester United’s perspective, with all of these factors, they believe he is an achievable target this summer.”
While Newcastle’s stance remains firm, Manchester United are expected to continue assessing alternative options before the transfer window closes.
The club still want to add a left-back and could also strengthen in midfield, but Hall remains one of their preferred long-term targets if Newcastle’s position softens later in the window.
For now, however, Newcastle have delivered a clear message: Lewis Hall is staying put.
