Leeds United are preparing to step up their pursuit of Parma goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, with reports from Italy claiming the Premier League club are ready to submit an official offer for the highly-rated Japan international.
Daniel Farke is keen to strengthen his squad after Leeds secured survival with a 14th-place finish last season, and signing a new first-choice goalkeeper has become one of the club’s top priorities.
Suzuki, 23, has emerged as Leeds’ preferred target after impressing in Serie A with Parma and continuing his excellent form at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The shot-stopper, who has earned comparisons to Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon because of his commanding style and physical presence, is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers.
According to Tuttosport, Leeds are now preparing a formal bid after extensive scouting of the goalkeeper, who has become a regular for Japan and attracted interest from several Premier League clubs.
However, completing a deal will not come cheaply.
Parma are protected by a reported €40 million (£34.5 million) release clause, although the Italian club are believed to be willing to negotiate for offers starting at around €30 million (£26 million). If Leeds meet that valuation, Suzuki would become the most expensive goalkeeper in the club’s history.
Competition for his signature is also growing.
Aston Villa are monitoring Suzuki as they assess long-term options in goal, while other European clubs have also tracked his progress following an impressive campaign in Italy and strong performances on the international stage.
Leeds’ pursuit of Suzuki could trigger another major change between the posts at Elland Road.
Brazilian goalkeeper Lucas Perri, who arrived last summer for a club-record £13.9 million fee for a goalkeeper, could be allowed to leave if Suzuki joins. Although Perri produced some encouraging displays during Leeds’ FA Cup run, he finished the season behind veteran Karl Darlow in the pecking order.
Darlow is understood to be close to agreeing a new two-year contract, leaving Perri’s future uncertain. Leeds would likely have to accept a financial loss on the Brazilian if they decide to sell him after just one season.
Leeds had also explored moves for other goalkeepers, including Manchester City’s James Trafford, but soaring valuations and competition from rival clubs have prompted the Yorkshire side to focus their efforts on Suzuki instead.
Born in the United States to a Ghanaian father and Japanese mother, Suzuki has enjoyed a rapid rise since moving to Parma in 2024. His athleticism, composure on the ball and commanding presence have established him as Japan’s first-choice goalkeeper, with many viewing him as one of the brightest young talents in his position.
Leeds now appear ready to test Parma’s resolve with an official approach as they look to secure one of the summer’s standout goalkeeping signings before the new Premier League season begins.
