Rafael Leao has fuelled speculation over a possible move to Manchester United after reportedly signalling his desire to leave AC Milan and embrace a new challenge outside Italy.

The Portuguese international is understood to be open to a Premier League switch and has emerged as a serious target for United as Michael Carrick continues his summer rebuild at Old Trafford.

Leao’s admiration for Manchester United icon Cristiano Ronaldo has only intensified rumours linking him with a move to the 20-time English champions.

After six seasons with AC Milan, the winger appears ready for a fresh chapter in his career.

Since arriving from Lille in 2019, Leao has developed into one of Europe’s most dangerous attacking players. The 26-year-old has accumulated an impressive 80 goals and 65 assists in 291 appearances for the Rossoneri, playing a key role in the club’s domestic and European campaigns.

His pace, direct running and ability to create chances from wide areas have made him one of Serie A’s standout performers.

Manchester United have reportedly been monitoring the Portugal star since April and view him as a player capable of transforming their attack.

The timing could also work in United’s favour.

AC Milan’s failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League has weakened their position considerably. Missing out on Europe’s premier club competition represents a significant financial setback and could make it more difficult for the Italian giants to retain some of their biggest stars.

As a result, Leao’s valuation is believed to have dropped into the €50 million to €60 million range, a figure that many of Europe’s elite clubs would consider attractive for a player of his quality.

Interest is already growing.

Turkish giants Galatasaray reportedly became the first club to submit a formal proposal for Leao earlier this summer, while Arsenal continue to monitor developments closely.

However, Manchester United may hold a significant advantage if the player’s personal preferences become a deciding factor.

Leao has often spoken about Ronaldo’s influence on his career and is believed to be attracted by the prospect of following in the footsteps of his Portuguese idol at Old Trafford.

For United, the transfer would address one of the squad’s biggest weaknesses.

The club have lacked consistent creativity and explosiveness from wide areas in recent seasons, particularly on the left flank. Leao’s ability to beat defenders, carry the ball over long distances and contribute goals could provide exactly the attacking spark Carrick is seeking.

At 26, the Portugal international is entering what many regard as the peak years of his career.

Unlike younger prospects who require significant development, Leao arrives with extensive experience at the highest level while still possessing the potential to improve further.

The key question now is whether Manchester United will move quickly enough.

With Arsenal, Galatasaray and potentially other European heavyweights keeping a close watch on the situation, competition for Leao’s signature is expected to intensify as the transfer window progresses.

For now, the winger’s future remains undecided, but if United can secure a deal within Milan’s reported valuation, they could land one of the most exciting attacking players available on the market this summer.
