Real Madrid have reportedly turned their attention to Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez after cooling their pursuit of West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.
The Spanish giants had been monitoring Fernandes following his impressive season despite West Ham’s relegation from the Premier League. However, reports in Spain suggest the 21-year-old Portugal international now favours a move to Tottenham Hotspur, prompting Real Madrid to explore alternative midfield targets.
Fernandes has emerged as one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe this summer. Manchester United, Tottenham and Real Madrid have all shown interest, but Spurs are increasingly confident of winning the race for his signature. Reports indicate Tottenham are preparing an offer worth up to £75-80 million, while West Ham are believed to value the midfielder at around £80 million.
According to Spanish outlet AS, Fernandes believes a move to Tottenham would offer him greater opportunities for regular development and first-team football than a switch to the Santiago Bernabeu.
With Fernandes seemingly heading elsewhere, Real Madrid have identified Chelsea and Argentina star Enzo Fernandez as their preferred midfield reinforcement. The 25-year-old World Cup winner has long been admired by the Spanish club, and reports in Spain claim he would be open to a move to Madrid if an agreement can be reached between the clubs.
Any deal for Enzo Fernandez is expected to be significantly more expensive than a move for Mateus Fernandes. Chelsea are unlikely to consider offers below €100 million, particularly given the Argentine’s importance to the squad and the fact he remains under a long-term contract.
Real Madrid are reportedly exploring ways to structure a deal, including the possibility of offering players as part of the package to reduce the transfer fee.
The developments come as Madrid seek to strengthen their midfield after two consecutive seasons without winning a major trophy. Manager Jose Mourinho is believed to view Enzo Fernandez as an ideal fit because of his ability to contribute defensively, dictate play and provide leadership in central midfield.
While Tottenham continue pushing to secure Mateus Fernandes, Real Madrid’s pursuit of Enzo Fernandez could become one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer window.
