Thierry Henry warns Arsenal against blockbuster Julian Alvarez swap deal

Arsenal legend believes Mikel Arteta should keep Viktor Gyokeres rather than sacrifice him to sign Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez.

Arsenal have reportedly been presented with an opportunity to sign Julian Alvarez this summer, but doing so could require Mikel Arteta’s side to sacrifice one of their own star forwards.

The Gunners remain among the clubs interested in the Atletico Madrid striker after his recent admission that he wants to leave the Spanish side. However, reports in Spain claim Atletico would only seriously consider negotiations if Arsenal included Viktor Gyokeres as part of the deal, along with a cash payment of between €40 million and €60 million (£34m-£52m).

Atletico are understood to admire Gyokeres and view the Sweden international as the type of traditional centre-forward capable of leading Diego Simeone’s attack. The proposed arrangement would allow the Madrid club to replace Alvarez while also receiving a substantial transfer fee.

The possibility of such a swap has divided opinion, with Arsenal legend Thierry Henry urging the club to think carefully before agreeing to part with Gyokeres.

Henry believes Alvarez is among the most complete forwards in world football thanks to his pressing, creativity, movement and finishing. However, he also argued that Gyokeres offers qualities Arsenal would struggle to replace, particularly his physicality, aerial presence and ability to occupy defenders. Rather than exchanging one striker for another, Henry believes Arsenal should be exploring ways to build an attack that includes both players instead of sacrificing either.

Arsenal invested heavily to bring Gyokeres to the Emirates and remain convinced the Swedish striker can become one of the Premier League’s leading forwards. After scoring 21 goals in 55 appearances during his debut campaign, he has established himself as a key figure in Arteta’s long-term plans.

At the same time, Alvarez remains one of Europe’s most coveted attackers. The former Manchester City forward has attracted interest from Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid after publicly stating that a transfer would be the best solution for his future. While Barcelona is believed to remain his preferred destination, Atletico’s reluctance to strengthen a direct La Liga rival has created an opening for Premier League clubs.

Reports suggest Arsenal’s interest in Alvarez extends beyond a simple striker search. Sporting director Andrea Berta and Arteta are understood to view the Argentine as a player capable of elevating the club’s attack thanks to his versatility, work rate and experience at the highest level.

Finances, however, remain the biggest obstacle. Atletico are expected to demand a package worth well over £100 million if Gyokeres is not included, making any outright transfer extremely difficult. Including the Swedish striker would reduce the overall fee but would also leave Arsenal searching for another powerful focal point in attack.

For now, Arsenal continue to explore their options while weighing up one of the biggest decisions of the summer. Alvarez represents a world-class opportunity, but Henry’s warning highlights the risk of weakening one area of the squad to strengthen another.

Whether the Gunners pursue the swap or attempt to structure a different deal could define one of the transfer window’s biggest sagas.
