Arsenal are reportedly preparing to test Newcastle United’s resolve by making a move for midfielder Bruno Guimaraes after opening discussions with the Brazil international’s representatives.

The Premier League champions are expected to strengthen several areas of Mikel Arteta’s squad this summer, and central midfield has emerged as one of the club’s priorities despite last season’s title success. Reports suggest sporting director Andrea Berta has already held preliminary talks with Guimaraes’ camp as Arsenal assess the possibility of bringing the Newcastle captain to the Emirates.

Newcastle are understood to be aware of Arsenal’s interest and are preparing for a possible approach. However, the Magpies have received no indication that Guimaraes wants to leave St James’ Park, with the midfielder remaining under contract until 2028.

Guimaraes has been one of Newcastle’s standout performers since joining from Lyon in 2022, establishing himself as both club captain and one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders. His performances have continued on the international stage, where he has impressed for Brazil at the World Cup, contributing three assists as the five-time champions progressed through the group stage.

Arsenal believe the 28-year-old would add leadership, creativity and greater control to an already talented midfield. His ability to dictate possession while contributing defensively has made him a long-term target for Arteta, who has admired the Brazilian since before his move to Newcastle.

Any deal, however, is likely to prove complicated. Newcastle are no longer under immediate financial pressure following the sale of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, reducing the need to cash in on another key player. Although Guimaraes remains one of the club’s most valuable assets, Newcastle are expected to resist any attempts to prise away their captain unless a substantial offer is made.

Arsenal’s pursuit also comes amid uncertainty surrounding Newcastle’s midfield plans. Tottenham Hotspur remain interested in Sandro Tonali after seeing previous bids rejected, while Manchester City have also been linked with the Italy international. Should Newcastle eventually lose Tonali, the likelihood of Guimaraes being allowed to leave would diminish even further.

Arteta is expected to oversee another ambitious recruitment drive as Arsenal look to build on their Premier League triumph. Alongside Guimaraes, the club continue to monitor several high-profile targets across midfield and attack, with strengthening squad depth viewed as essential ahead of another demanding domestic and European campaign.

For now, Arsenal’s interest remains at the exploratory stage, but Newcastle are fully aware that one of their most influential players is attracting attention. Whether the Gunners convert those initial discussions into a formal offer could become one of the biggest transfer stories of the summer.
