Arsenal are closing in on a major contract breakthrough with Jurrien Timber set to commit his long-term future to the club in what is expected to be the first of several high-profile renewals at the Emirates Stadium.

Sources indicate that negotiations between Arsenal and the Netherlands international have advanced significantly, with the framework of a new agreement already in place and only minor details left to be finalised.

The deal would reward Timber for his growing influence under Mikel Arteta and underline the club’s belief that he is one of the most important players in their long-term project.

Since arriving from Ajax, Timber’s Arsenal career has been a story of resilience and recovery.

The defender’s debut season was devastated by an anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during his first appearance for the club. However, he fought his way back and has since established himself as a key figure in Arteta’s defence.

Now with 95 appearances for Arsenal, Timber has become a regular starter and one of the first names on the team sheet whenever fully fit.

Club insiders believe the 24-year-old has developed into one of the finest full-backs in European football, with some at Arsenal reportedly viewing him as the ideal right-back for Arteta’s tactical system.

That belief only strengthened after another impressive campaign in which Timber was among Arsenal’s standout performers before injury struck again.

A persistent groin problem disrupted the latter stages of his season, forcing him to miss more than a dozen matches during a crucial period of Arsenal’s campaign.

The injury also robbed him of the opportunity to play a major role in the club’s run-in, with his only appearance after recovering coming as a substitute in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain.

There was further frustration on the international stage.

Timber had hoped to represent the Netherlands at the 2026 FIFA World Cup but was forced to withdraw after aggravating the groin injury, ending his dream of competing at the tournament.

The defender is now working towards full fitness ahead of the start of the new Premier League season, although Arsenal remain completely committed to tying him down to a new long-term deal.

His extension is expected to be the first of several major agreements being worked on by sporting director Andrea Berta.

Alongside Timber’s renewal, Arsenal are progressing discussions with manager Mikel Arteta over a lucrative new contract that would place him among the highest-paid coaches in world football.

The club are also exploring improved terms for captain Martin Odegaard and midfielder Declan Rice as they seek to secure the core of their squad for the coming years.

However, Timber’s deal is understood to be the most advanced and could be announced in the near future.

For Arsenal, retaining one of their most versatile and influential defenders would represent a significant boost as they continue building a squad capable of challenging for the Premier League and Champions League titles.

After overcoming serious injury setbacks and establishing himself as a cornerstone of Arteta’s plans, Timber now appears set to be rewarded with the long-term commitment both player and club have been working towards.
