Manchester City have renewed their interest in Chelsea full-back Malo Gusto as discussions continue over Enzo Maresca’s proposed move to the Etihad Stadium, although Chelsea’s valuation could prove a major stumbling block.
City have been in negotiations with Chelsea over compensation for Maresca after the Italian agreed to leave Stamford Bridge earlier this year. During those talks, the Premier League champions have also revisited their long-standing admiration for Gusto, who remains one of the club’s preferred defensive targets.
The France international has impressed since joining Chelsea from Lyon in 2023, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most versatile young defenders. Comfortable at both right-back and left-back, Gusto’s attacking style and technical ability fit the profile City are seeking as they reshape their squad.
Maresca’s expected arrival has strengthened City’s interest. Having worked closely with Gusto during his time at Chelsea, the Italian is understood to regard the 23-year-old as an ideal addition to his new squad. Reports suggest the City hierarchy also believe his versatility would provide valuable cover across both defensive flanks.
Chelsea, however, are under little pressure to sell. The Blues have reportedly informed City they would only consider offers exceeding £70 million, with some reports placing their valuation closer to £75 million. City admire the player but are believed to regard that figure as significantly above his market value.
As a result, Manchester City continue to assess alternative options. Newcastle United defender Tino Livramento, Brentford’s Michael Kayode and Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso all remain under consideration should negotiations for Gusto fail to progress.
Chelsea’s transfer activity has only increased speculation surrounding Gusto’s future. The club are close to completing the signing of Atalanta defender Marco Palestra, another versatile full-back capable of operating on either side of the defence. Although Chelsea insist Palestra’s arrival will not directly affect Gusto’s role, rival clubs are monitoring the situation closely.
Sources also indicate Gusto would welcome the opportunity to reunite with Maresca if a move became possible. That does not mean the defender is actively pushing to leave Stamford Bridge, but the prospect of joining one of Europe’s leading clubs under a coach he already knows is understood to appeal.
For now, Chelsea remain in a strong negotiating position, with Gusto under a long-term contract and viewed as an important member of Xabi Alonso’s squad. Unless City are prepared to significantly increase their offer, a transfer is likely to remain one of the summer’s most difficult deals to complete.
