The Netherlands have reportedly narrowed their search for a new head coach after Ronald Koeman stepped down in the wake of the Oranje’s disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign.
According to reports from Italy and the Netherlands, former Liverpool manager Arne Slot and ex-Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag have emerged as the leading contenders to succeed Koeman as the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) begins planning for a new era.
Koeman resigned after the Netherlands suffered a shock Round of 32 elimination against Morocco. The match finished 1-1 after extra time before the Dutch were beaten 3-2 in a penalty shootout, bringing their World Cup journey to an earlier-than-expected conclusion.
The disappointing exit has increased pressure on the KNVB to make a swift appointment ahead of upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures and the start of the next World Cup qualification cycle.
Slot is widely viewed as one of the standout candidates thanks to his attacking philosophy and reputation for developing cohesive, high-intensity teams. His success in club football and deep understanding of Dutch football make him an attractive option for a national side searching for a fresh identity.
Ten Hag is also firmly in contention. The former Ajax and Manchester United manager built his reputation on structured, possession-based football and his ability to develop young players, qualities that could suit a Netherlands squad packed with technical talent.

Other names, including Ruud van Nistelrooy and Peter Bosz, have been linked with the vacancy, but current reports suggest Slot and Ten Hag are leading the race.
The KNVB now faces a significant decision as it looks to restore consistency and competitiveness to the national team. Despite boasting one of Europe’s most talented squads, the Netherlands have struggled to impose themselves in decisive knockout matches at recent major tournaments.
Whoever is appointed will inherit a group capable of competing at the highest level but one that requires greater tactical cohesion and consistency to challenge for international honours again. Whether the federation opts for Slot’s progressive attacking style or Ten Hag’s methodical approach, the next coach will be expected to build a clear footballing identity and return the Oranje to the latter stages of major competitions.
