Manchester United eye cut-price move for Crysencio Summerville after West Ham relegation clause slashes asking price

Dutch winger's reduced release clause has attracted interest from Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea and several Premier League clubs.

Manchester United are among a growing list of Premier League clubs monitoring the availability of Crysencio Summerville after West Ham United’s relegation triggered a major reduction in the transfer fee required to sign the Netherlands international.

The 24-year-old winger has emerged as one of the most sought-after players on the market following an impressive World Cup campaign with the Netherlands, where his performances against elite international opposition further enhanced a reputation that had already attracted attention before the tournament.

Sources indicate that Summerville’s contract, signed when he joined West Ham from Leeds United in 2024, included a clause linked to the club’s league status. The provision stipulated that if the Hammers were relegated, the amount needed to secure his services would fall significantly.

Had West Ham retained their Premier League status, clubs would have been expected to pay around £70 million to land the former Leeds winger. Following relegation to the Championship, however, that figure has dropped to £40 million, making him a far more attainable target for clubs looking to strengthen this summer.

Despite the reduced valuation, West Ham are not expected to demand the entire amount upfront. Instead, any agreement is likely to be structured over several years, with the overall package potentially exceeding £40 million through instalments and performance-related elements.

The clause has effectively established Summerville’s market value rather than creating a rigid asking price, allowing interested clubs greater flexibility in negotiating a deal.

Manchester United are understood to have discussed the Dutch international internally as they continue assessing options to bolster their attacking ranks. His versatility across the forward line is viewed as a key asset as the club looks to add greater depth and creativity before the new campaign.

United are far from alone in their interest.

Tottenham Hotspur remain firmly in contention after following Summerville’s progress for an extended period, while Chelsea have also been monitoring his situation as they evaluate options to strengthen their wide attacking positions.

Elsewhere, Fulham and Aston Villa continue to watch developments closely, with Newcastle United also remaining informed after making enquiries about the winger previously.

The increased attention comes at a difficult time for West Ham, who are preparing for life in the Championship after suffering relegation. While the club are determined to remain competitive, they also face the prospect of losing one of their most valuable attacking players.

Sources say West Ham’s de facto owner, Daniel Kretinsky, has made it clear internally that he does not want the club to oversee a mass exodus following relegation. That stance comes after Mateus Fernandes completed an £85 million move to Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the transfer window.

The club are also determined to retain captain Jarrod Bowen, who is understood to be the only member of the squad whose Premier League salary was protected despite relegation.

Summerville has not received the same contractual protection.

His wages are understood to have fallen following West Ham’s drop into the Championship, although that situation may prove short-lived given the growing number of clubs considering a move for the Dutch winger.

The former Leeds United player combines Premier League experience with the ability to operate on either wing or through the frontline, qualities that have made him an attractive proposition in a summer market where proven attacking players are commanding substantial fees.

Although West Ham would ideally prefer to keep Summerville as they attempt to secure an immediate return to the Premier League, there is increasing acceptance within the club that his future is likely to lie elsewhere.

With a reduced release clause, strong performances on the international stage and interest from several of England’s leading clubs, Summerville has quickly become one of the standout transfer opportunities of the summer window.
